Shop Talk: How to Update Your C-40 Firmware

One of the many benefits our latest generation C-40 Cockpit Indicator offers is the ability to upgrade the firmware quickly and easily with a thumb drive. This functionality enables Onboard to release new features and fix any bugs that customers report to us as they use the C-40 in the field.
Firmware updates are available as a direct download from our website at no additional cost. Here's what you need to do to upgrade the firmware on your C-40.
Download the Software
Firmware updates will be saved as .zip files on the website. To find the the file, you can go to the product page for your C-40 cargo hook kit, scroll down to the "Manuals" section, and look for the blue download icon for .zip files.
Look for the blue "ZIP" file download icon on the product page to get a free copy of the latest firmware for your C-40.
After you've downloaded the file, unzip it using a file achive program, such as 7-Zip, WinRAR, etc. and then copy the unzipped files to the root folder of a USB stick or thumb drive.
Install the Firmware
Complete instructions for installing the firmware update on your C-40 kit can be found in your Owner's Manual, which you can also download from the Manuals section of the product page for your cargo hook kit. In a nutshell, here's what you'll need to do:
- Plug the USB stick into the USB port on the back of the C-40 unit.
- Go to the settings menu in the C-40 and select “Load Firmware.”
- Follow the prompts until the indicator displays “Firmware updated.”
- Perform an “Installation Zero” per the instructions in your manual.
Register your C-40 to Receive Firmware Update Notices
To register products for Document Update notices, select "Product Registration" from the Account menu.
Onboard Systems intends to update our C-40 firmware as new features and functions are developed, bugs are found and resolved, and to improve software security and stability. The easiest way to ensure that you always have the most current firmware installed is to register your C-40 (P/N 210-293-00) in our Document Update Service program. This free service lets you set up an online account and enter the products or the documents you want to track for updates. You can choose how to receive the updates (email, fax, or both) and how frequently to receive them (daily, weekly, or monthly). Email notifications contain links to the updated materials, making it very fast and easy to download the latest manuals and software patches.
If you already have an online account for purchasing products or getting quotes, simply add the products or documents to your existing online account using the Product Registration entry on the Account menu of our website. We also provide a brief video walkthrough that shows you how to register products in your account.

Additional Service Note
If you need to send your C-40 in for factory service, please note that Onboard will automatically upgrade the firmware to the most current version as part of our standard diagnosis and repair process. If you do not want the firmware upgraded, you should note this on your RMA request form. There is no additional charge for the firmware upgrade.
