Onboard Systems International, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that it has received STC certification from both the FAA and Transport Canada certification for its TALON Cargo Hook kit for the Robinson R44 Raven II. Now Raven II owners can take advantage of all the technology benefits offered by Onboard’s innovative cargo hook line. In addition, the new certifications represent a special milestone for the company, as Onboard now offers complete hook kits for all of Robinson's R22 and R44 models.

“We are very excited about the recent U.S. and Canada approvals for the Raven II TALON Hook Kit,” said Jason Lemmon, General Manager for Onboard Systems. “The Raven II makes an ideal light utility ship for external load work, and operators are finding that they can fully exercise all of that muscle with our TALON Cargo Hook Kit.”

The newly approved hook kit for the R44 Raven II will especially enhance the capabilities of this aircraft, which is the strongest of Robinson's top selling line of affordable light helicopters. Cargo hooks turn power into profit, and the high-performance R44’s increased speed, altitude range and greater payload capacity make it the perfect candidate for tough cargo hook jobs.

The TALON hook system for the R44 weighs only 5 pounds and extends just 7 inches from the aircraft skin, preserving the Raven II's aerodynamic lines and leaving ample ground clearance. The keeperless hook design handles a wide variety of load ring sizes and styles, and eliminates the possibility of losing a load that inadvertently gets past the keeper. Finally, an optional weighing system helps pilots instantly determine the exact weight of the cargo on the hook.

Adding this system to a Robinson R44 Raven II instantly adds to the performance of this popular versatile aircraft. The new Keeperless Cargo Hook Kit includes all the components required for full installation on the Raven II, which can be performed quickly and easily with readily available tools. Once installed, operators will enjoy significant release safety and lower maintenance costs, with the ability to overhaul the hooks themselves with parts that readily available from stock.

<![CDATA[NEW AS355 CARGO HOOK SWING ADDS VERSATILITY]]> press release

Onboard Systems International, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced receipt of FAA STC certification for a complete cargo hook swing kit designed for the Eurocopter AS355 aircraft. Designed to reduce damage to the hook and cables, the new system is similar to Onboard's popular AS350 swing kit and offers several key advantages over the standard OEM equipment.

Damage to the hook and cables are common problems found on the Eurocopter swing system, but the new Onboard swing kit has built-in travel limits and an innovative bumper ring that protects the cargo hook and control cables from striking the frame. In addition, the kit utilizes the proven TALON™ LC Keeperless Cargo Hook, which allows the operator to safely use a wide variety of load ring sizes and styles while minimizing the risk of inadvertent cargo loss.

Users of the Onboard Systems AS350 Swing System have already come to depend on this added protection to keep them up and profitable throughout long contracts, and the company expects that AS355 operators will also welcome this latest technology development. “The AS355 aircraft has traditionally been used for executive transport, but this ship also makes an excellent utility aircraft,” said Karsten Lemmon, Director of Marketing for Onboard Systems. “Now AS355 operators have an economical option for setting up existing aircraft for external load work. This allows them to put existing aircraft to work on additional contracts and boost their profitability.”

In addition to offering easy, one-handed loading, the Talon LC Keeperless Hook are designed to reduce on-going maintenance costs, as operators can overhaul this hook themselves. Spare parts are readily available from stock, and the hooks themselves can be purchased for considerably less than hooks from other manufacturers. The TALON LC Keeperless Cargo Hook is also certified for use on many other light aircraft including Bell, Eurocopter and McDonnell Douglas models.

<![CDATA[NEW CARGO HOOK RAISES INDUSTRY STANDARD]]> press release

Onboard Systems International, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, is pleased to announce receipt of FAA approval of the Onboard Systems TALON™ LC Hydraulic Cargo Hook. This latest innovation from industry leader Onboard Systems greatly increases the security of helicopter cargo hook loads by addressing the safety issues with the existing cargo hook system, making Eurocopter AS350 external load operations safer, more productive and profitable than ever before.

The AS350 swing frame experiences a large amount of movement during external load operations. This requires the manual release cable to be routed and rigged to very exact specifications. Otherwise, the cargo hook release mechanism may be accidentally activated by the release cable and cause an inadvertent release of the load.

The new TALON LC Hydraulic Cargo Hook utilizes a hydraulically activated release mechanism that takes the place of the traditional manual release cable. This new release system requires no rigging, is conveniently routed with the electrical release cable and is unaffected by the movement of the cargo hook—significantly decreasing the chance of an inadvertent load loss. Furthermore, it is as easy to use as existing technology, yet greatly increases safety and productivity through more secure load operations.

“We are proud to introduce the TALON LC Hydraulic as a significant safety innovation in cargo hook technology,” said Jason Lemmon, General Manager for Onboard Systems. “This new hook system provides AS350 helicopter operators worldwide with the safest hook design available.”

The TALON LC Hydraulic Cargo Hook is patent pending and certified for use on the complete Onboard Systems AS 350 Swing Cargo Hook System.

<![CDATA[NEW SAFETY GUARD PREVENTS ACCIDENTAL FUEL RELEASE]]> press release

Onboard Systems International, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, is pleased to announce the availability of its new FAA STC approved Eurocopter AS350 Fuel Drain Guard Kit. This mechanical guard protects the fuel drain valve from contact with the cargo hook swing or uneven terrain, preventing an inadvertent release of fuel—a vital safety improvement. The kit is quick and easy to install, interfacing with the existing Eurocopter valve, lever, and control cable. The result is an exceptional level of fuel security for this versatile aircraft.

“The guard was introduced in direct response to ongoing safety issues with the Eurocopter fuel drain lever assembly,” said Karsten Lemmon, Director of Marketing for Onboard Systems. “The Eurocopter fuel drain was never designed for operators wanting to perform external load work with their aircraft. The operators who did cargo hook work either had to remove the lever and the convenience associated with it or risk losing fuel during operations. This new guard kit overcomes these aircraft limitations making the AS350 a safer and more versatile aircraft.”

The placement of the Eurocopter AS350 fuel drain valve makes the system vulnerable to uncommanded fuel releases. These can happen when landing on snow or uneven ground. When the skid gear sinks into unstable terrain, the cargo-hook swing frame can push upward, into the fuel drain valve, opening it and causing fuel to drain out. The valve can also be opened during flight by the swing frame flying into the belly of the aircraft with no load, or from the recoil effects of heavy cargo-hook releases. Onboard Systems' Fuel Drain Guard Kit makes these scenarios virtually impossible.

With its efficient, effective design, Onboard Systems Eurocopter AS350 Fuel Drain Guard Kit greatly increases the level of security for this aircraft. The kit is compatible with aircraft equipped with the Onboard or Eurocopter Swing System. Owners and operators of Eurocopter AS350 helicopters should consider it a must-have safety measure against preventable accidents.

<![CDATA[FAST ROPE CARGO HOOK SELECTED FOR NH90 PROGRAM]]> press release

Onboard Systems International, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that it has been selected as the sole supplier of fast rope cargo hooks for the NH90 Helicopter Program. Fast roping is an air assault maneuver that rapidly inserts soldiers into a combat situation without the need to land an aircraft.

“Our fast rope cargo hook had previously passed a high level of rigorous qualification testing for use in AgustaWestland's EH101 and Lynx aircraft,” said Jason Lemmon, General Manager for Onboard Systems. “We are extremely pleased that our hook's proven design, lower system weight and state-of-the art safety innovations allowed us to provide Eurocopter with an economical, off-the-shelf solution that also met their stringent requirements.”

In addition to having lower maintenance costs and a lower system weight than other fast rope hook systems, Onboard's fast rope cargo hook system offers greater release safety ratings than comparable models. “One of the primary reasons that Eurocopter was interested in working with us was due to the high level of release safety engineered into our hooks,” Lemmon added. “In an emergency situation—for example, if a rope got snagged on the ground—the fast rope would exert such a tremendous force on the helicopter that the hook mechanism could fail to open, crashing the aircraft. We provide one of largest built-in safety margins in the industry, which significantly reduces the risk of hook release failure.”

<![CDATA[ONBOARD'S BO105 HYDRAULIC HOOK FAA CERTIFIED]]> press release

Onboard Systems, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that its new hydraulic cargo hook kit for the Eurocopter BO105 aircraft has been certified by the FAA and is now in production. The kit has also been submitted to Transport Canada, and should be certified for use in Canada in the near future.

According to Jason Lemmon, General Manager of Onboard Systems, “Our new hydraulic hook kit was designed to eliminate increasing numbers of inadvertent cargo releases from the legacy cargo hook equipment on the BO105 helicopters. Our new replacement cargo hook kit provides a cost-effective solution to this problem.”

Excessive movement during external load operations can unintentionally activate the manual release cable on an improperly rigged cargo hook system, causing an inadvertent release of the load. The hydraulic system will only open the hook when the pilot activates the release handle—snagging or damage to the cable will not lead to accidentally dropping the cargo. In addition to the hydraulic release, the new kit features a bumper ring and improved positioning to further protect control cables and electrical connectors from damage.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems MD500 Hydraulic Hook Kit Receives FAA Certification]]> press release

Onboard Systems, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that its new hydraulic cargo hook kit for the MD500 aircraft has been certified by the FAA and will begin production shortly. Onboard is also planning to submit the kit to Transport Canada so that it can be certified for use in Canada.

“The legacy hook installed on the MD500 has a history of inadvertent cargo releases, which have been traced back to improper rigging and routing of the manual release cable on this aircraft,” said Jason Lemmon, General Manager of Onboard Systems. “If the rigging isn’t set up properly, there may not be enough slack to allow for normal movement of the hook during external load operations, which could cause the hook to open unexpectedly. Our new kit features a hydraulic release cable that doesn’t require any rigging adjustments at installation, and offers a simplified route along the aircraft belly.”

Excessive movement during external load operations can unintentionally activate an improperly rigged manual release cable on a cargo hook system, causing an inadvertent release of the load. The hydraulic system presents a significant safety advantage because if the hydraulic cable gets snagged or damaged, it will not result in an accidental release of the cargo.

Another complaint operators have voiced about the legacy hook is that the manual release cable seems to wear out quickly, often requiring replacement every six months to a year. The new Onboard hydraulic cable is made of braided stainless steel and is very durable, making the new kit very cost-effective and easy to maintain over time.

Onboard Systems, Inc. designs and manufactures a complete line of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment under its TALON™ brand, including belly hooks, cargo hook suspension systems, onboard weighing systems and remote hooks. Its low-weight, high-quality products provide helicopter operators with increased cost efficiencies and safety through customer-driven designs, responsive service and support, and low on-going maintenance costs. <![CDATA[Enstrom Selects Onboard Systems Cargo Hook for the 280FX & F-28F Aircraft]]> press release

Onboard Systems, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that Enstrom Helicopters has selected the TALON™ LC Keeperless Cargo Hook for factory installation on their 280FX and F-28F piston-powered helicopters. Enstrom previously selected this Onboard cargo hook for factory installation on their 480B aircraft in January 2008.

Known for their superior performance at high altitudes and in hot temperatures, the 280FX and F-28F models are popular with flight schools, businesses and law enforcement agencies. These customers will now be able to perform external load work using Onboard’s safe, reliable and cost-effective TALON LC Keeperless Cargo Hook, which is designed to release 2.5 times the rated load. In an emergency situation—such as a longline snag—this important feature gives pilots a significant margin of safety in which to release the cargo load. In addition, the keeperless hook can safely use a wide variety of load ring sizes and styles, offering maximum flexibility for operators.

According to Tracy Biegler, Director of Sales & Marketing at Enstrom, “Our positive experience in adding Onboard’s hook to the 480B program earlier this year made it a logical next-step to offer this cargo hook on our other models. Enstrom takes great pride in expertly combining performance, safety and affordability in our aircraft, and Onboard’s demonstrated commitment to these same principles makes it easy to offer their cargo hook as another great option for our entire line of helicopters.”

“We are pleased that our TALON cargo hooks are now available for installation on multiple Enstrom helicopters,” said Jason Lemmon, President and General Manager of Onboard Systems. “Enstrom’s piston-powered helicopters are designed to work well in extreme environments, and we are confident that our products will enable these operators to safely perform external load work under the widest range of conditions possible.”

<![CDATA[Onboard System's TALON Hydraulic Hook Approved for AS350 Sling Kit]]> press release

Onboard Systems, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that its revolutionary TALON LC Hydraulic Cargo Hook has been STC certified by the FAA as part of a new sling suspension system for the Eurocopter AS350 aircraft. Onboard has also submitted this system to Transport Canada and EASA for certification in Canada and Europe, respectively.

Onboard’s innovative TALON LC hydraulic hooks are designed to minimize the risk of inadvertent cargo releases caused by excessive movement during external load operations, which can activate an improperly rigged manual release cable on a cargo hook system. Hydraulic hook systems allow for simplified cable routing along the belly of the aircraft, and snagging or damage to the cable will not lead to accidentally dropping the cargo.

“This new product has been driven by our customers,” said Jason Lemmon, President and General Manager of Onboard Systems. “Now those operators who prefer working with the more compact sling system for the AS350 instead of the swing system can enjoy the easier installation and load security benefits of our hydraulic hook technology.”

The new AS350 sling hydraulic hook system is designed to mount to the single hard point on the belly of the aircraft. It includes both the fixed and removable provisions, as well as an innovative bumper ring that helps to protect the control cables. Because the sling system has a lower profile than the swing system, many operators have both configurations and switch between the two systems, depending on the external load mission they are working.

<![CDATA[Bell 407 Fixed Beam Suspension System from Onboard Systems Receives FAA Certification]]> press release

Onboard Systems, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that its new fixed beam suspension system for the Bell 407 has been STC certified by the FAA. Onboard has also submitted this system to Transport Canada and EASA for certification in Canada and Europe, respectively. The new fixed beam suspension system eliminates the side-to-side banging of the original trolley system design and also offers other benefits, including weight reduction, a simplified design, built-in travel limits and improved ground clearance.

“The fixed beam design greatly reduces the total part count—which also reduces maintenance costs and requirements,” said Jason Lemmon, President & General Manager of Onboard Systems. “Eliminating the trolley system makes it much quieter to operate, as there’s no more side-to-side banging. It also allowed us to reduce the total system weight by 35%.”

The fixed beam system offers additional clearance as measured from the lowest hanging point of the cargo hook. This is important for operations in remote field locations where prepared landing pads are few and far between. The addition of built-in travel limits to both the load beam and the cargo hook to protect the hook, the suspension system and the aircraft.

Also available in the first half of 2009 will be an Onboard Weighing System for the new fixed beam assembly, which uses Onboard’s new pin load cell technology. Pin load cells are designed to mount on one side of the hook by replacing the main attach bolt, rather than attaching as a separate link above the hook. This allows for increased ground clearance, easier cable routing and lower weight, while still allowing the pilot to know the exact weight of the load on the cargo hook to maximize load efficiency while reducing airframe stress.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems Unveils New 2K Remote Cargo Hook Kit at 2010 HAI Convention]]> press release

Onboard Systems, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that its new 2,000 LB TALON Remote Cargo Hook will be on display at the 2010 HAI HeliExpo convention in Houston, Texas (February 21-23). The 2K Remote Cargo Hook is now in production and is available for purchase.

2K Remote Cargo Hook kit from Onboard SystemsDesigned specifically for use with lighter helicopters, the 2K Remote Cargo Hook offers operators greater versatility because it is built around the popular TALON Keeperless Carousel Hook. Using simple hand tools, operators can separate the hook from the cage and use it on a carousel system. Alternatively, operators who already own a TALON Keeperless Carousel Hook can simply order the cage assembly and build their own 2K Remote Cargo Hook.

In addition, Onboard Systems has also developed a Brush Guard Kit that mounts on the side of the TALON Carousel Hook to help keep sticks or branches that may push up against the “Open” knob from causing an inadvertent release. The Brush Guard Kit can be used on the TALON Keeperless Carousel Hook, with or without the cage assembly, and is included as part of the 2K Remote Cargo Hook kit.

Onboard Systems International, Inc. designs and manufactures a complete line of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment under its TALON™ brand, including belly hooks, cargo hook suspension systems, onboard weighing systems and remote hooks. Founded in 1975, Onboard Systems is a privately held US corporation located in Vancouver, Washington, with an international sales office in the UK.

Onboard Systems, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that it is now offering a full-cage option for its popular 3,000 LB Remote Cargo Hook. The new cage has been carefully designed to provide maximum protection for the hook while still providing easy loading access for ground crew — even when wearing work gloves.

The optimized full-cage frame design weighs just a half-pound (.3 KG) more than the half-cage version. According to Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Onboard Systems, "Helicopter operators fly many kinds of missions, in all kinds of terrains and conditions. While our half-cage remote hook enables fast and easy loading, operators have asked for a full-cage option for external load missions in conditions that require additional hook protection. So we are pleased to be able to offer them this product, which will add greater versatility to their mission capabilities."

In addition, for those operators who already own several half-cage 3K remote hooks, Onboard can convert these products to the full-cage configuration during the next product overhaul.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems Introduces New Crew-Loc™ Cargo Hooks]]> press release

Onboard Systems, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced its new line of Crew-Loc™ remote cargo hooks. These hooks offer the ultimate in load security for transporting high-value loads because the hook can only be opened by ground crews, reducing the possibility of an inadvertent release for valuable loads and equipment.

“We’ve received a number of requests from customers for a remote safety hook to transport valuable loads, such as drilling equipment, where the hook can only be opened by the ground crew,” said Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Onboard Systems. “Our customers also wanted protective, highly visible cages for safety, and we are pleased to offer this hook with two styles of cages suitable for use in a variety of environmental conditions.”

Onboard’s rotating Crew-Loc Cargo Hooks are available in both full-cage and half-cage configurations and are rated for 6,000 LB (2,722 KG). They are particularly suited to non-repetitive long line lifts where security of the load is paramount and detachment of the load can be accomplished by ground crew.

The Crew-Loc hooks combine the cargo hook and protective cage into one integrated unit that is robust, reliable and low maintenance. The durable, high-visibility powder coat frame ensures years of duty in the field, and the swivel hook uses an anti-friction bearing design to allow the hook to rotate freely under load. Enlarged thumb access to the low-profile release lever makes it easy for ground crew to open the hook, even with work gloves.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems Rolls Out New & Improved TALON™ Keeperless Cargo Hook]]> press release

Onboard Systems, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that it has updated their flagship product, the TALON™ LC Keeperless Cargo Hook, by incorporating additional safety-oriented and user-friendly innovations.

“As we approach the tenth anniversary for the TALON LC Keeperless Cargo, our engineers have incorporated customer feedback and new safety technologies into this next-generation design,” said Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Onboard Systems. “The result of these efforts is a significantly improved hook that has been rolling out into growing numbers of complete and replacement cargo hook systems.”

The updated TALON Keeperless Cargo Hook is the same size and weight as its predecessor, and uses the same mounting interfaces and electrical and manual release cable connection locations. But it also includes hook lock indicator that uses alignment marks to help ground crew verify that the cargo hook is fully closed and locked, as well as improved load beam geometry, which allows the hook to open up to almost 90° (vs. 45° for the previous generation hook) for better low-load, high-friction drops.

A window in the manual release cover that allows an operator to check the manual release cable rigging at the cargo hook, and a highly-visible, wider and longer release lever makes it easier for ground crews to open the hook while wearing work gloves.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems BO105LS A-3 Hydraulic Cargo Hook Kits Receive FAA & Brazil Certification]]> press release

Onboard Systems, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that its replacement hydraulic cargo hook kits for the Eurocopter BO105LS A-3 aircraft have been certified by the FAA and ANAC/Brazil and are now in production. The kits have also been submitted to Transport Canada and EASA for certification in Canada and Europe. These easy-to-install replacement cargo hook kits can be used to upgrade legacy cargo hook systems and come with or without an integrated Onboard Weighing System.

“Our TALON® replacement hydraulic cargo hook kits are very effective at reducing inadvertent cargo releases on BO105 and other aircraft previously equipped with legacy cargo hook equipment," said Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Onboard Systems. "The new kits provide a cost-effective, technologically superior upgrade for BO105 operators looking to overhaul or replace an outdated cargo hook system."

Excessive movement during external load operations can unintentionally activate an improperly rigged manual release cable on a cargo hook system, causing an inadvertent release of the load. Onboard's hydraulic cargo hook kits will only open the hook when the pilot activates the release handle—snagging or damage to the cable will not lead to accidentally dropping the cargo. In addition to the hydraulic release, the new kit features a bumper ring and improved positioning to further protect control cables and electrical connectors from damage.

An optional Onboard Weighing System allows pilots to instantly know the exact weight of the cargo on the hook, reducing the risk of overload airframe stress and helps the pilot make more informed aircraft loading decisions. In addition, Onboard's cargo hooks are designed to release 2.5 times the rated load in an emergency situation (such as a longline snag), giving pilots a significant margin of safety in which to release the cargo load.

Onboard Systems, Inc. designs and manufactures a complete line of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment under its TALON brand, including belly hooks, cargo hook suspension systems, onboard weighing systems and remote hooks. <![CDATA[Electric Swivels from Onboard Systems Help Increase Safety for Rotating Loads]]> press release

Electric Swivel attached to a TALON Remote Cargo Hook and a longlineOnboard Systems has designed and manufactured a growing line of electric swivels to enhance flight safety for external load missions transporting spinning loads. Electric swivels provide a continuous electrical connection between the cockpit release and the remote cargo hook, while allowing for hook rotation to accommodate external load movement without curling or tangling of the long line.

Current electric swivel models include load capacities ranging between 2,000 to 6,000 LB (907 to 2,722 KG). These products include many safety and durability features, such as stainless steel housing for the swivel body, stainless steel braid for the electric cables, and easy linkage couplings. They also include a built-in travel stop that mounts directly on the lug of Onboard’s TALON® brand Remote Cargo Hooks to limit rotation and prevent damage to the electrical cable.

“The recent FAA SAFO regarding Part 133 external load operations with spinning loads discusses the safety advantage that swivels can provide when performing external load work,” said Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Onboard Systems. “That is why Onboard created a robust, safety-focused line of electric swivels that work with our TALON® remote cargo hooks—as well as other brands—to ensure that the greatest number of operators would have access to this important safety equipment.”

On November 4, 2013, the FAA issued a safety alert for operators (SAFO 13010) to outline current guidance and best practices for Part 133 external load operators. The SAFO discusses the importance of using a swivel so that spinning loads do not affect flight safety. The precautions are especially important when rigging loads (or load configurations) that are new to the operator—particularly those known to rotate. The document also recommends that Part 133 operators train pilots and ground personnel thoroughly and conduct briefings before each operation begins.

“Onboard’s electric swivel line was designed to satisfy the need for robust, durable swivels that will function well in a wide variety of environmental conditions, while also providing extra protection for the electrical harness,” said Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Onboard Systems. “Our swivel design incorporates key input from many of our worldwide customers and reflects the very latest safety innovations available.”

Onboard’s electric swivel bodies are made of 100% stainless steel to ensure years of trouble-free use in a wide variety of environments. The entire length of both electrical cables is sheathed in stainless steel braid and includes robust strain relief at the cable ends, protecting them from damage during operation and minimizing the potential for breakage. Both ends of the swivel include attachment bolts and nuts that allow it to connect directly to the long line and the remote cargo hook.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems to Debut New SPIDER Smart Carousel at the 2014 Heli-Expo Show in Anaheim, California]]> press release

SPIDER Smart CarouselOnboard Systems International, Inc., a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, today announced that it will unveil the production version of its new SPIDER® Smart Carousel for external load operations at the Heli-Expo Show in Anaheim, California. Designed to work specifically with Onboard's new TALON 1K Carousel lighted cargo hooks and three-channel electric swivel, the SPIDER Smart Carousel can be configured with four, six or eight carousel hooks as needed for external load work missions. Onboard's Heli-Expo booth will feature a hands-on, interactive SPIDER Smart Carousel and controller display area so that visitors can practice operating a carousel by learning to recognize the light patterns, advance the arming sequence to the next hook, drop all the hooks simultaneously, and more.

Carousel systems are the preferred multiple-drop delivery system for helicopter external load work, and the SPIDER Smart Carousel is designed to be flexible, durable and convenient to operate. The rugged dual hoop weldment protects the hooks from above and below, and the durable, high-visibility finish makes it easy to spot from the ground. Hooks can be added or removed from the controller in the field as needed.

“Our customers asked us to develop a rugged, flexible carousel that would give the pilot an instant-read method for determining which hook was armed,” said Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Onboard Systems. “The SPIDER Smart Carousel’s new controller and lighted 1K Carousel hooks provide the highly visible, illuminated feedback that many operators have been asking for.”

The SPIDER Smart Carousel provides illuminated feedback showing which hook is armed for release. The all-new carousel controller keeps track of which hooks have been released and automatically advances to arm the next hook. The pilot can bypass the auto-advance settings and drop loads out of sequence if needed—including drop-all functionality—and the illuminated pattern will update automatically to show the next hook staged for release. Click here to visit a photo gallery showing each distinctive light pattern.

Designed to thrive in harsh environments, the controller is positively O-ring sealed with minimal potential leak points and a Gore-Tex® vent to allow the system to breathe. The addition of Onboard's three-channel Electric Swivel provides a continuous electrical connection between the cockpit release and the hooks, allowing the SPIDER Carousel to spin freely to accommodate external load movement without curling or tangling of the long line.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems to Debut New 1K Carousel Hooks at the 2014 Heli-Expo Show in Anaheim, California]]> press release

TALON 1K Lighted Carousel HookOnboard Systems, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, today announced that it will unveil the production versions of their new TALON® 1K Carousel cargo hooks at the Heli-Expo Show in Anaheim, California. Designed for optimal performance when operating in a multi-hook carousel system, the TALON 1K Carousel Hook was engineered from the ground up to ensure it would include the most requested features from external load operators, such as a dual actuation release lever to help eliminate accidental releases caused by contact with branches.

The new TALON 1K Carousel hook design also allows for easy field replacement of the power cord, as well as improved performance in icy conditions. The release lever was moved to the front of the hook to provide better access for ground crews, and a lock indicator window will help them confirm that the load is secure. Available with or without a built-in LED light, the keeperless hook design meets United States Forestry Service contract requirements.

TALON 1K Carousel Hook“In taking on this project, we worked closely with our customers to address the major pain points they’ve experienced when doing carousel work,” said Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Onboard Systems. “The new TALON 1K Carousel hooks will make loading, transporting and releasing multiple loads faster, easier and safer than ever before—for both pilots and ground crews.”

The TALON 1K Carousel hook features a dual actuation release lever to help eliminate accidental releases caused by contact with branches. The lever must be pinched together to open the hook manually, but we’ve made it easier for the ground crew to load by moving the lever to the front edge of the hook, facing out of the carousel. For added safety, a lock indicator window gives the ground crew a quick visual signal that the hook is securely locked. Finally, the power cord can be easily replaced—even out in the field—via an access cover and terminal block.

To decrease the overall weight of a carousel system, the hook capacity was reduced to 1,000 pounds (453 kilograms), which helped shed two pounds per hook—despite adding armor side plates to protect the throat area against rigging damage. The keeperless load beam assembly opens to almost 90 degrees to ensure that loads will slide smoothly off the hook when opened by the pilot. And for those operators using the SPIDER® Smart Carousel, the lighted hook option is readily visible in direct sunlight at distances over 200 feet to give the pilot a quick visual signal of which hook is armed for release.

TALON LC Hydraulic Cargo HookOnboard Systems International, Inc., a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, today announced that it has been awarded a contract from Airbus Helicopters to design and manufacture the cargo hook system for the EC130T2 aircraft. The new system will be a single-point hydraulic release cargo hook sling design featuring a TALON® cargo hook and an integrated Onboard Weighing System.

When completed, Onboard’s EC130T2 cargo hook system will weigh about 4 KG (9 LB) and will be available exclusively through Airbus Helicopters. The new EC130T2 cargo hook system is compatible with the crash resistance requirements to which the fuel system of the EC130T2 complies (27.952). The compact design preserves ground clearance and includes a built-in stowage mechanism. As with all TALON cargo hooks, in emergency load situations it can release up to 2.5 times the rated load of 1,500 KG.

The TALON LC Hydraulic Cargo Hook offers a hydraulically activated secondary release system with lines that can be routed with the electrical control cables instead of a separate loop and path for greater safety. The result is a cleaner installation that reduces the possibility of snagging the line, which is manufactured from braided stainless steel for maximum durability. To further protect the cables, hook and fuselage, the cargo hook system includes travel stops. Finally, the integrated Onboard Weighing System includes a cockpit indicator to show the pilot the precise weight of each load, increasing safety and productivity.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems Awarded Contract to Develop External Load Weighing System for the Bell 429]]> press release

TALON LC Hydraulic Release Cargo Hook System for the Bell 429 aircraftOnboard Systems International, Inc., a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that it has been awarded a contract by Bell Helicopters to design and develop a new adaptation of its TALON® LC Hydraulic release external cargo hook system for the Bell 429 helicopter. The new version will include an Onboard Weighing System with an NVG cockpit display. The external load weighing system will feature Onboard’s pin load cell technology, where a pin load cell replaces the main cargo hook attach bolt, rather than attaching as a separate link above the hook. This allows for increased ground clearance, easier cable routing, and lower weight.

“We are excited to be working with Bell on this important update to the existing Bell 429 cargo hook system,” said Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Onboard Systems. “This will be the first Bell aircraft with a factory-install option for an Onboard Weighing System, which has been a popular aftermarket purchase for many Bell aircraft operators.”

The new cargo hook system design was requested by Bell to fulfill an order for fifteen Bell 429s with external cargo hook systems for the Canadian Coast Guard. The Coast Guard purchase specified that the cargo hook systems must include a weighing system with an NVG cockpit display. The new Onboard Systems external cargo hook system with the Onboard Weighing System will be available for Bell factory installation in 2015 exclusively through Bell Helicopter.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems Awarded Contract for EC145T2 Cargo Hook Kit by Airbus Helicopters]]> press release

TALON LC Hydraulic Cargo HookOnboard Systems International, Inc., a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, today announced that it has been awarded a contract from Airbus Helicopters to provide the cargo hook kit for the EC145T2 beam system. The new beam system will use a single or dual-hook configuration of Onboard’s TALON® LC Hydraulic cargo hook.

The cargo hook beam system can be installed as a dual-hook, Human External Cargo (HEC) certified configuration, or as a single-hook, non-HEC configuration. The dual-hook configuration will have a weight rating of 800 KG (1,764 LB), and the single-hook configuration will have a weight rating of 1,600 KG (3,527 LB). The forward hook in the dual-configuration is the HEC back-up hook, so operators can readily switch between HEC and non-HEC external load operations by simply installing a guard cover over the front hook. In addition, the dual-hook system will have a release lever that can open each hook individually.

The new beam system will feature the TALON LC Hydraulic Cargo Hook, which offers a hydraulically activated secondary release system. As with all TALON cargo hooks, in emergency load situations it can release up to 2.5 times the rated load of 1,600 KG (3,527 LB). The system will be designed with modular, interchangeable components to simplify installation, maintenance and upgrade procedures.

Airbus Helicopters also plans to certify the same beam system on the EC135 aircraft. At that point, operators who have both EC135 and EC145T2 aircraft in their fleet will able to interchange the cargo hooks between these two aircraft models. For example, if a cargo hook on an operator’s EC135 is removed for maintenance, a hook from their EC145T2 aircraft can be swapped in. Operators will also be able to upgrade from a single-hook to a dual-hook installation by purchasing and installing additional components to their common beam configuration.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems Approaches Final Production Milestone for its New TALON Auto-Loc Cargo Hook System]]> press release

TALON Auto-Loc Cargo HookOnboard Systems today announced that its latest remote cargo hook, the TALON® Auto-Loc Cargo Hook System, has completed prototype testing and is moving into production. Onboard will be demoing the new system at the 2016 HAI Heli-Expo Show in Louisville, Kentucky, using an interactive display.

Designed to enable helicopter pilots to pick up unattended loads, the TALON Auto-Loc Cargo Hook System consists of two components: an Auto-Loc cargo hook (which is suspended from the belly of the helicopter on a longline) and a target (which is attached to a pre-rigged load). The helicopter pilot slings the Auto-Loc cargo hook down onto the target to automatically lock the pair together, then lifts the load for transport. The pilot can release the load by either setting it down on the ground or releasing it in air. No ground crew needs to be present during the loading/unloading operations.

“We started this project in response to customer requests for a cargo retrieval system that would allow helicopter pilots to pick up pre-rigged, unattended loads,” said Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Onboard Systems. “We surveyed our customer base in our newsletter, The Hook, to make sure that we understood exactly what they wanted so we could develop the safest, most user-friendly system possible to meet their needs.”

Feedback from the customer survey revealed that the TALON Auto-Loc system would need to be able to work with a wide variety of aircraft, supporting loads up to 6,000 LB (2,722 KG). In addition, customers wanted to give their pilots the ability to either set the load down on the ground or release loads while airborne. Finally, the total cost for the complete system would need to come in under $10,000 USD.

Folding TargetSince the cargo hook component would be attached to a longline and suspended under the belly of an aircraft, it needed to be heavy enough to remain steady while lowering it down onto the target, but not too heavy for a single person to handle while attaching it to a longline on the ground. Onboard’s goal was to keep this component under 50-LB (22.7-KG), since the OSHA single man lift guidelines recommend that most people shouldn’t try to lift more than that by themselves.

The target component would need to be easy to spot from above and very stable, remaining upright even if the cargo hook cage bumps against it as the pilot maneuvers over the target latching device. Since the target would need to be pre-rigged to the cargo by the ground crew, it would also need to be as light and compact as possible, folding up for easy stowage, transport, and setup. Finally, the target’s hardpoint would need to quickly be attached to the load using a wide variety of shackles or rigging.

After an intensive period of development and testing, Onboard is delighted that the final production model of the TALON Auto-Loc Cargo Hook System will meet or exceed all of these requirements. The Auto-Loc Cargo Hook and cage component will weigh about 46 LB (20.9 KG) and cost about $7,500 USD. The folding target component weighs in at 15 LB (7KG), and will cost around $500 USD per unit. In addition, the new TALON Auto-Loc Cargo Hook includes Onboard’s new Surefire™ cargo release technology. The Surefire circuit requires a purposeful, half-second press against the remote hook release button to guard against inadvertent releases caused by accidentally brushing against the button during flight.

Go to video“This is good news for those customers who wanted to be able to buy multiple target units so they could pre-rig several loads for unattended pickups,” said Lemmon. “And since the pilot can release the longline from the belly hook in an emergency situation, we felt that the addition of the Surefire circuit into the cargo hook would maximize load security for those customers who plan to use this system to lift expensive equipment like drills.”

Some of the most innovative features of the new TALON Auto-Loc System are in the target itself. The increased width-to-height ratio and unique legs provide incredible stability, while allowing for the entire piece to fold down like an umbrella. The brightly colored synthetic fabric on two of the side panels makes the target highly visible from above, but the open panels on the other side will make it easy to fasten the load to the hardpoint and help ensure that the attach line doesn’t get tangled up in the target. “It’s impressive to watch the testing footage and see how quickly the pilot is able to maneuver the cargo hook over the target and latch onto it, despite the strong rotor wash,” Lemmon added.

To help eliminate accidental releases caused by contact with branches, the hook has a dual actuation release lever that must be pinched together to pull open. But it's easy for a ground crew to open—even with gloves. The new TALON Auto-Loc Cargo Hook System will prove useful in a variety of situations. For example, if flying conditions aren’t favorable on a particular day, the ground crew can still rig up the loads and move onto their next project, and the helicopter can fly in at any time to pick up and move the cargo. It’s ideally suited for picking up loads in remote locations, such as drill equipment used for mining, and also has a lot of potential for working with unmanned helicopters and drones.

Built around Onboard’s safety-forward TALON® LC Hydraulic Cargo Hook, the latest-generation prototype will be on display in the Onboard Systems booth at the 2016 HAI Heli-Expo Show in Louisville, Kentucky.

The STC kits for the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X aircraft will include many of the cutting-edge technologies that operators have come to expect from Onboard Systems equipment. The low-profile system is designed to provide excellent ground clearance, and can be removed quickly from the aircraft without the use of tools, and with no loose parts to manage. The TALON LC Hydraulic Hook greatly increases load security by using a hydraulic release mechanism instead of a traditional manual release cable, and built-in travel limits for the forward, aft and lateral directions will prevent damage to aircraft and control cables.

Onboard's Bell 505 cargo hook kits can also be configured with the new Surefire™ Release Technology. An integrated electronic circuit is added inside the cargo hook, which provides about a half-second release delay from when the electrical release button is pressed until the hook opens to help guard against inadvertent releases. In addition, the Onboard Weighing System option will help your pilot know the exact weight of the load. Our pin load cell simply replaces the attach bolt, eliminating extra linkage for improved ground clearance.

Onboard Systems looks forward to welcoming customers in their Heli-Expo booth (#11144) and giving them an opportunity to view the Bell 505 Cargo Hook equipment.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems to Demo New TALON Auto-Loc Cargo Hook System at the Heli-Expo Show in Louisville, Kentucky, March 1-3, 2016]]> press release

TALON Auto-Loc Cargo HookOnboard Systems will be showcasing its newest remote cargo hook, the TALON® Auto-Loc Cargo Hook System, at the 2016 HAI Heli-Expo Show in Louisville, Kentucky, with an interactive display.

The booth demonstration exhibit will allow visitors to simulate moving the TALON Auto-Loc cargo hook over the top of a target to lock them together for take-off. The hands-on nature of the display will help demonstrate how the design of the two pieces facilitates successful pairing, helping customers get a better idea of how useful the new remote hook system could be in a variety of situations.

The TALON Auto-Loc Cargo Hook System is ideally suited for picking up loads in remote locations, such as drill equipment used for mining. For example, if flying conditions aren’t favorable on a particular day, the ground crew can still rig the loads and move onto their next project, and the helicopter can fly in at another time to pick up the cargo.

Onboard Systems looks forward to welcoming customers in their Heli-Expo booth (#11144) and giving them an opportunity to try out the new TALON Auto-Loc Cargo Hook System.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems Robinson R66 Cargo Hook Kits Receive Brazilian ANAC Certification]]> press release

Robinson R66 cargo hook kit Onboard Systems International, Inc., a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, announced that its cargo hook kits for the Robinson R66 aircraft have been certified for use in Brazil by the Agencia Nacional de Aviacao Civil (ANAC). A Certificado de Homologacao Suplementar de Tipos (CHST) was issued for the cargo hook kits. Onboard has already received FAA, Transport Canada, and EASA certification for these kits.

“We’re pleased to be able to respond to the requests for certification from our Brazilian customers who want to install Onboard’s cargo hook equipment on their Robinson R66 aircraft,” said Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Onboard Systems. “Onboard’s cargo hook system for the R66 includes many of our latest safety developments, and we look forward to helping our customers put this equipment into service for their external load work missions worldwide.”

Onboard’s Robinson R66 Cargo Hook Kit is built around the latest-generation TALON® Keeperless Cargo Hook, which is designed to handle a wide variety of load ring sizes and styles while eliminating the possibility of losing loads that might inadvertently slide past the keeper. Other safety features include a rugged mount point with quadruple shear joint to ensure torsional strength, the best available ground clearance from the lowest hanging point of the cargo hook (10.5-IN / 27-CM), and a lock indicator window to give the ground crew an easy visual confirmation that the hook is locked.

The optional Remote Hook Electrical Release Kit gives pilots the ability to release loads from the cockpit, while the Onboard Weighing System helps to show the exact weight of the load on the cargo hook. Onboard’s weighing system for the Robinson R66 uses state-of-the-art pin load cell technology to increase ground clearance by replacing the main attach bolt instead of mounting as a separate link above the hook, providing easier cable routing and lower system weight.

Onboard’s Robinson R66 Cargo Hook Kit comes with all the fixed and removable provisions needed for installation. It includes the cargo hook, attach point, manual and electrical release cables, plus the optional Onboard Weighing System and Remote Hook Electrical Release Kit, if ordered. As with all Onboard cargo hooks, maintenance and overhauls can be performed at the factory, by a qualified repair facility, or by the operator in the field using simple hand tools.

“We’re pleased to be able to respond to requests for certification from our European customers who want to install Onboard’s cargo hook equipment on their Bell 206L aircraft,” said Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Onboard Systems. “These cargo hook systems are designed to provide pilots with optimal external load mission performance while using this aircraft.”

The parabolic ramp design in Onboard’s Bell 206L suspension assembly gradually decelerates the rolling trolley to minimize side-to-side impact of the load when the helicopter is in motion. Built-in travel limits keep the hook from striking the airframe and relieve strain on the hook control cables. These low-weight systems are designed for fast installation and removal in the field using ordinary hand tools.

The newly certified cargo hook suspension system kits for the Bell 206L include the TALON LC Keeperless Hook Kit (P/N 200-258-01) and the TALON LC Keeperless Hook Kit with Onboard Weighing System (P/N 200-259-02), which uses Onboard’s pin load cell technology. <![CDATA[Onboard Systems BO105 Cargo Hook Kits with Surefire Option Certified by FAA]]> BO105 cargo hook
Replacement TALON LC Hydraulic Cargo Hook Kit with Surefire release technology (P/N 200-302-10)

Onboard Systems International, Inc., a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, today announced that its hydraulic cargo hooks with Surefire® release technology have been STC certified by the FAA for the Airbus Helicopters BO105 aircraft. Onboard has also submitted these Surefire-enabled systems to Transport Canada for certification. The Surefire circuit requires a purposeful, half-second press against the hook release button, guarding against inadvertent load loss resulting from accidental contact with the release button during flight.

According to Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Onboard Systems, “Onboard is committed to offering our Surefire release technology on as many cargo hook systems as possible, due to the extra load security that Surefire provides. The combination of our hydraulic cargo hooks—which of themselves provide significant protection against inadvertent load releases—along with our Surefire technology provides BO105 operators with the maximum level of load safety available today.”

Excessive movement during external load operations can unintentionally activate an improperly rigged manual release cable on a cargo hook system, causing an inadvertent release of the load. Onboard's hydraulic cargo hook kits only open the hook when the pilot activates the release system—snagging or damage to the cable will not lead to accidentally dropping the cargo.

The newly certified Surefire cargo hook kits for the BO105 include the Replacement TALON LC Hydraulic Hook Kits for aircraft previously fitted with Breeze/ERC hooks (P/N 200-302-10) and Siren hooks (P/N 200-387-10). Other safety features include a rugged mount point with quadruple shear joint to ensure torsional strength, the best available ground clearance from the lowest hanging point of the cargo hook (10.5 in. / 27 cm), and a lock indicator window to give the ground crew an easy visual confirmation that the hook is locked.

The newly certified Surefire cargo hook kits for the Robinson R66 include the TALON LC Keeperless Cargo Hook Kit (P/N 200-380-10) and the TALON LC Keeperless Cargo Hook Kit with Onboard Weighing System (P/N 200-381-10). In addition to offering the Surefire release technology option on new equipment, Onboard Systems can upgrade existing equipment for select models of certified cargo hooks at the factory during overhauls or upon request. Upgrade kits will also be available for operators with the capabilities to perform this work in house or through a local service facility. Please contact us for more information.

According to Karsten Lemmon, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Onboard Systems, “When the U.S. Army started releasing Black Hawks for sale to the civilian market in 2014, we anticipated that there would be interest in replacing the legacy cargo hook equipment, since it requires CADs for the backup release functionality. As more and more Black Hawks are retired from military service and reconfigured for civilian external load missions, we believe our replacement hook kits will prove very popular.”

Onboard’s TALON® MC Keeperless Cargo Hook Replacement Kits for the Black Hawk were designed to include all of the safety features operators have come to expect from Onboard products, including lower hook weight, a keeperless design to eliminate dynamic rollout potential, 2.5 times the rated load release capacity, and a dual-actuation release lever to help eliminate accidental releases caused by contact with foreign objects.

The newly certified TALON MC Keeperless Cargo Hook Replacement Kits are available with an Onboard Weighing System (P/N 200-438-00), or without (P/N 200-437-00). An Onboard Weighing System lets pilots instantly know the cargo weight on the hook, reducing the risk of overload airframe stress and helping them make more informed aircraft loading decisions. To ensure maximum load security, Onboard’s Surefire® Technology is also built into the Black Hawk cargo hook kits. The Surefire circuit requires a purposeful, half-second press against the hook release button, guarding against inadvertent load loss resulting from accidental contact with the release button during flight.

<![CDATA[Onboard Systems Hires Pablo Bravo as Vice President of Engineering]]> press release

Download Press Release

Onboard Systems International, LLC, a leading provider of innovative helicopter cargo hook equipment, today announced that Pablo Bravo, most recently with DART Aerospace, has joined Onboard as Vice President, Engineering. Mr. Bravo brings 18 years of industry experience as a technical and strategic leader and holds a delegation from the FAA as a Designated Engineering Representative for Structures and Mechanical Systems & Equipment in Part 27/29, making him intimately familiar with the certification process as well as the importance of product safety in the rotorcraft industry.

Pablo Bravo, Vice President, Engineering for Onboard Systems
Pablo Bravo, Vice President, Engineering for Onboard Systems

When asked about the move to Onboard, Bravo said “As an engineer, you are always drawn to intricate machines and how they work, and in aerospace, we are constantly challenged to produce a part that is lightweight and strong at the same time. Onboard’s product offerings push both of those buttons for me, and I’ve always admired how their hooks exist at the junction between clockwork-like complexity, lightweight minimalism, and thoughtful function. However, you can’t produce great products without having great people, and it’s clear that there is plenty of passion and pride that pervades the daily actions of my new teammates. I’m excited to be part of a team that cares deeply about the entire process, and strives to be product-centric without compromising the customer experience. I feel that I’m joining at the cusp of exponential growth, and I’m ecstatic to bring my previous experience to help bring the company to the next level.”

After graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, Mr. Bravo started his career as a Project Engineer with Apical Industries, quickly being promoted into leadership roles with increased responsibility. After Apical was absorbed into DART Aerospace, he was exposed to a wide spectrum of mission equipment for helicopter and fixed wing aircraft, and led a dynamic, multi-site organization responsible for the design and development of emergency floats, air conditioning systems, landing gear, composite structures, aerial firefighting, and external cargo equipment.

“When a company grows quickly, the growth tends to strain the organization as people are asked to wear multiple hats and responsibilities increase,” Bravo said. “My goal is to make the experience as sustainable as possible. I’d like to do this by developing my team and preparing them for growth. Onboard already has great processes and structure in place, and I can add value by optimizing these processes to the mutual benefit of the team and our customers. Additionally, I want to instill a culture of innovation. The current designs are impressive, and there is always room for continuous improvement. As Onboard grows, I want to leverage new tools in the organization to level up the ability of the team to output the next generation of cargo hook design.”

We maintain a large inventory of products, spare parts, and complete systems on site, allowing fast shipment of most items. While other manufacturers may put you on a waiting list for months, Onboard is able to turn around orders quickly — oftentimes the same day your payment is received. View our shipping policy here
