Let Your Load Spin for Safety with Electric Swivels
Sunday, June 15, 2014
There are times when you want a load to be able to spin, and other times when you don't. When you are transporting a spinning load, swivels are an essential tool for enhancing flight safety. The FAA issued a safety alert for operators (SAFO 13010) in November 2013 which discusses the importance of using a swivel so that spinning loads do not affect flight safety.
Electric swivels provide a continuous electrical connection between the cockpit release and the remote cargo hook, while allowing for hook rotation to accommodate external load movement without curling or tangling of the long line.
Onboard's electric swivel line was designed to satisfy the need for robust, durable swivels that will function well in a wide variety of environmental conditions, while also providing extra protection for the electrical harnes. Our swivel design incorporates key input from many of our worldwide customers and reflects the very latest safety innovations available.
Current electric swivel models include load capacities ranging between 2,000 to 6,000 LB (907 to 2,722 KG). These products include many safety and durability features, such as a lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminum body and easy linkage couplings. They also include a built-in travel stop that mounts directly on the lugs of Onboard's TALON® brand Remote Cargo Hooks to limit rotation and prevent damage to the electrical cable.
The entire length of both electrical cables is sheathed in a flexible rubber casing with built-in tensile strain relief for long life. Both ends of the swivel include attachment bolts and nuts that allow it to connect directly to the long line and the remote cargo hook.
In addition, Onboard manufactures a swivel specifically for non-TALON hooks. Our Electric Swivel Assembly (P/N 210-305-30) is designed for loads up to 6,000 LB (2,722 KG) and features the same benefits as swivels designed for TALON remote hooks.
No matter what type of remote hook you're using, electric swivels from Onboard Systems can enhance flight safety and improve performance for all your external load operations.
